Tenema

How does Tenema work?

On Tenema every country, and the world, picks its own 10 films each day. There are no editors: everyone who votes decides the films and their order; the product only enforces the rules below. These are the films the community picked, not the most watched ones.

The day and the lock

Each country's day starts and ends at midnight local time; the world list follows the UTC day.

At midnight the list locks and joins the archive. Locked results are never changed, deleted or corrected.

Voting: a 10-slot ballot

Everyone submits one ballot a day and can change it until midnight. A ballot has 10 slots; some may stay empty.

The film in slot k earns 11 − k points: slot 1 earns 10, slot 2 earns 9 … slot 10 earns 1.

Votes from accounts younger than 24 hours count at half weight.

Ranking: the Borda count

A film's score is the sum of its slot points across all ballots (a Borda count). The highest total ranks first.

Ties go to the film on more ballots, then the one with more first places, then the one suggested earlier.

Getting on the board

Putting a film on your ballot suggests it. A film joins the live board once at least 3 different people have it on their ballot that day (1 when fewer than 3 people voted). Films below the threshold do not count at the lock.

Yesterday's #11–20 films start the next morning on the board, so it is never empty.

Official lists

A country list becomes official with at least 25 voters, the world list with 100. A day that locks below the threshold is archived as "not official".

Rest period

A film that makes a country's top 10 cannot return to that country's list for 30 days; the world list has the same 30-day rest. That keeps the same films from winning every day.
